We completed the first regatta of the season in Charleston this past weekend. The regatta was a great success with us coming in 13th out of 18 teams after a whole year of not sailing. Alec Deakin '23 and Carolina Cassedy '22 skippered in A fleet with Christine Catherman '22. Ian Connoly '25 and Ryan Ringer '25 held up the B fleet with great conditions in Charleston.
Duke Sailing competed in a record 9 regattas during the 2019-20 school year, and placed top-5 finishes in two of them. Under the seasoned leadership of Avery Fulford '21, Julia Dworetzky '21, Charles York '21 and Annika Hsu '21, the club has welcomed many talented freshmen and newbies alike to college sailing. While Duke Sailing is sad to see the club leaders leave to study abroad in Europe, it is excited to announce that Katie Cassedy '20, Carolina Cassedy '22, Colin Kelly '22, Victoria Bevard '21, Christine Catherman '22 and Winston Yau '22 will be taking over the club next year and we cannot wait to continue building the club to new heights!
Stay tuned for more updates come September! At Georgia Tech this past weekend, five Duke sailors earned 6th place out of 10 teams! Avery Fulford '21 and Julia Dworetzky '21 started out the day in A fleet, but later Avery took Colin Kelly '22 out for his first regatta ever (and he killed it!). Freshman Carolina Cassedy skipped B fleet with sailing veteran Annika Hsu '21, dominating the racecourse and nailing those roll tacks. This will be the last regatta for the fall, so the team will turn focus to practices. Stay tuned for more regatta updates this Spring!
The team sent racing groups to two regattas on the weekend of September 29th—one to North Points Regatta 3, and the other to the MAISA-SAISA SailPack Women's regatta. Seasoned Duke sailor Julia Dworetzky led a team of all-female Duke sail newbies to Raleigh, clinching a 3rd place out of 9. Incredible! Sophomores Avery Fulford, Annika Hsu, Charles York and senior Moriah Taylor got 8th place out of 11 at USC's yacht club near Columbia. Go Duke!

Congratulations to Texas A&M for finishing second and to Tulane University for finishing in third! In addition, thank you to UT Austin and the Hammond family! With a solid contingent of returning upperclassmen and talented freshmen, Duke Sailing started the fall strong. Battling with a brutal current and the top teams in SAISA, Duke finished 9th out of 17 at the SAISA Open on September 12th-13th in Charleston, SC. This past weekend, the team traveled to Tennessee for the North Points 2 regatta, finishing solidly in first place after capturing six bullets in ten races, with Alex Katsis ’16 finishing first in four out of five races. Congrats to freshmen Forest, Veohnti, Julia, Daniel, Alfonso, and Nick for doing so well at their first college regatta!
Next weekend, the team travels to Clemson for North Points 3! Full scores breakdowns can be found at http://scores.collegesailing.org. Duke Sailing joined NC State and UNC-CH on Lake Wheeler today for the 2nd Annual Triangle Tango Regatta, finishing the day second after NC State. Twelve races were sailed in a competitive combined fleet in challenging conditions - heavy gusts and ever-shifting winds caused multiple capsizes and kept the sailing tight.
A big thank you to NC State's SAILPACK for hosting this wonderful regatta and providing competitors with food! A breakdown of the day's scores can be found below: http://scores.collegesailing.org/s15/triangle-tango/ This past weekend, Duke Sailing travelled to the University of Tennessee to participate in their North Points 4 regatta. The team took home a strong 4th place overall behind a 4th place finish in A Division by Alex Katsis '16 and Louis Garza '17 and a 3rd place finish in B Division by John Sipp '18 and Walker Eacho '18.
