How much experience is required to join the team?
None at all! Many of our sailors never sailed before college; all that you need to know is how to swim.
When are practices and what is the time commitment of joining the team?
Your time commitment to the team is as little or as much as you want. We go to practices with NC State on Fridays from 3 till sundown, but they hold practices Monday and Wednesday for anyone who wants to attend. We hold practices at Lake Crabtree during the weekends if there is no regattas, so expect to practice either Saturday or Sunday morning. Practices typically do not run longer than 5 hours, so there is still plenty of time left on those days for personal agendas. On the contrary, traveling and competing at regattas is a considerable time commitment, and those traveling on any given weekend should expect to leave Friday afternoon and return either Saturday or Sunday night, depending on the length of the regatta.
Do I have to provide my own transportation to practice/regattas?
It is a common concern that the lake we practice on is 25 minutes from campus, but fret not. We organize a carpool for each practice so that everyone who wants to go can go, regardless of whether or not they have a vehicle on campus. As far as transportation goes for regattas, the team gets a rental car and travels together to the destination.
How many regattas does the team compete at?
Historically, we have sailed approximately five regattas a semester; however, we are constantly looking to participate in more.
Who gets to sail at regattas?
We select sailors to represent Duke University at regattas based on both attendance at practice and skill level.
What gear do I need?
Since the weather in North Carolina is typically on the warmer side, a swimsuit, athletic pants/shorts and a t-shirt are all that is required. As the weather becomes cooler, fleeces and outerwear becomes more of a necessity. Life jackets are provided if you do not have one. Note that many of the more experienced racers on the team own their own complete set of gear and life jackets; contact us with any questions or if you need any suggestions on which brands are most recommended.
